Selecting the Vase
Part of the fun in making a flower arrangement comes from choosing the right vase for the bouquet.
Yes, using any vase or container you have laying around the house will work. BUT, if you really want to step up your flower arranging game, (and we both know you do) you will want to choose a vase that is in alignment with the style of the bouquet.
The vibe of this bouquet is farmhouse, and what is more farmhouse than a white tin? This vase also meets all the needs of the arrangement. It’s the right style, profile height and mouth width.
The 3.5″ wide mouth is a great size for bouquets. It allows for more flowers, creating a fuller bouquet, but it’s not so wide that you would need to create a tape grid.
Make sure to get yours before they are gone for the season! Click the link below!
*This particular tin isn’t fully waterproof, but don’t let that dissuade you, I certainly didn’t! The simple solution is posted further below.
White Stock Flowers
I love working with Stock flowers! They smell great, have lovely cascading blooms that last for days and are great for creating the base of a bouquet.
Stock flowers are one of the easiest flowers to work with. Simply trim their stems at a 45-degree angle with sharp, clean shears, (try these Heavy Duty Shears for best results).
Next, add them to the tin as shown. Let them fall out to the sides and adjust as needed. Due to the fullness of their blooms and sturdy stems, you probably won’t really need to though. These charming garden flowers do all the work for you!
TIP: Make sure to remove any leaves that will end up below the mouth of your vase. This keeps the water cleaner longer and allows for plenty of room for your other flowers. Feel free to leave the upper most leaves for added greenery.
These South American flowers are another all-time fav of mine and for good reasons. They come in so many various colors, have a long shelf life and their clustering blooms can be quite broad, making them a great addition for bouquets.
You will want to treat these flowers similarly to the Stock Flowers by removing the lower leaves and trimming the stems.
Once they are prepped and ready to go, simply place the Alstroemerias all throughout the bouquet, breaking up colors and filling out the bouquet even further.
Side note: If the Lilies are leaning too much in one direction, rotate the stem until the flowers are pointing in the desired direction.
An Autumn Classic!
If someone were to ask you, what’s the ideal Fall flower? What would you say? I would think it’s the Chrysanthemum, as it is Autumn’s signature flower.
Their bountiful blooms and quintessential Fall hues, make them the most commonly used flower of the season. So, it only makes sense to include Mums in our Fall Farmhouse bouquet.
I chose these medium, ombre orange, Mums to go alongside the Stock Flowers and Alstroemeria, as they reminded me of the setting sun on a cool evening. If you look closely, you can see the dainty petals curl along the edges, adding even more character to the flower themselves and the bouquet.
For simplicity’s sake, once again, trim the stems and distribute the flowers evenly within the arrangement. You can also vary their heights, softening the shape of the bouquet.
It’s beginning to look like an heirloom pumpkin patch with the various shades of orange and the creamy white!
One More Subtle Touch!
Not only am I a big fan of flowers, but I also love plants! I have tons of houseplants all throughout my home.
Some of my favorite houseplants are my variegated varieties. The various shades of green blending together, highlighted by soft shades of white make my heart go bidi bidi bom bom!
When I saw the Variegated Pittosporum, I knew I had to incorporate them in this bouquet. The extra tinges of green and cream lined edges would make the bouquet complete.
Place the Pittosporum sprigs along the edges and sprinkle some within the bouquet, leaving them elevated slightly above the flowers.
As with all the others, make sure to trim the stems and remove any leaves that will be below the water line. The Pittosporum leaves are a bit thicker; using a thorn remover can be helpful.
How to turn a non-waterproof vessel into a functional vase!
Sometimes finding the perfect vase for your arrangement can be tricky. Or maybe you’re being super resourceful, but the vase you’ve chosen is not exactly intended for supporting live flowers.
Don’t fret, I’ve got you! All you need to do is place a plastic container OR a jar inside the vase to hold the water and flowers.
Make your arrangement as you normally would. Once you’re finished, grab all the flowers at once and place them in the waterproof container, then slip the smaller container into the decorative vase.
You can either fill the smaller container with water prior to or after inserting it within the vase; whichever you find easier.
I hope you find these Fall Farmhouse flowers uplifting and you’ve been encouraged to add a pop of color to your cozy space! Not only will the bright colors provide you with a little “pick me up,” but the subtle scent of fresh flowers will surely evoke a sense of peace.
As always, I have enjoyed leading you on this flower arranging journey. Thank you for allowing me to be your floral guide. Until next time, take care flower fans.
