Red roses on Valentine’s Day!

Valentine’s Day is the most popular day to give red roses to a loved one. The red rose’s symbolism of love dates back to ancient Greece, specifically to Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty.

The story begins with the birth of the goddess. She rose from sea foam, surrounded by white roses. Aphrodite was known for her influence over relationships, as well as her beauty, love, and passion. The goddess was said to have many lovers, but she truly only loved Adonis. During his death, Aphrodite rushed to his side, and in doing so, pricked her foot on the thorn of a white rose. Her blood dripped onto the rose, turning it red and thus linking the red rose to Aphrodite, the goddess of love.

During the Victorian era, people began sending flowers to loved ones as a form of communication called floriography. This act of love, combined with the symbolism of red roses, led to the modern tradition of giving red roses on Valentine’s Day, a day for expressing love.

Willow Eucalyptus

Willow Eucalyptus, or Eucalyptus Babylonia, is one of 700 species from the genus Eucalyptus that are native to Australia, New Guinea, Indonesia and nearby islands. Eucalyptus is well known for the fragrant scent and medicinal properties. Many of the species are frequently used in floral arrangements due to their variety of decorative leaves, soft ashy blue-green shades and that notorious Eucalyptus aroma.

Garden Roses

Garden Roses, (roses cultivated prior to 1867) are some of the most beautiful roses, with their lush and fragrant blooms. They were originally grown for their medicinal properties, to make perfumes, and as confetti. Roses are still used for those purposes, but now many are grown for admiring, whether in your garden or in a vase, bringing a touch of elegance to any space. With such a full bloom, these gorgeous flowers are sure to make anyone smile, especially on Valentine’s Day.

Salal Tips

There’s more to these bright green, waxy leaves than just a floral element. Salal tips, also referred to as Lemon Leaf, are another plant with a rich history and an abundance of uses. From being edible to medicinal, to being used to create dyes, Salal tips serve many purposes, historically used by Native Americans. For today’s purposes, they add a pop of bright green and wider leaves, providing varying texture.

Selecting the Vase

A thoughtfully selected vase can greatly elevate the overall aesthetic of an arrangement, though its impact is often overlooked.

Finding the right vase for a flower arrangement is much simpler than one may imagine. All you need to do is follow a few guidelines, and lucky for you, I can help with that!

Size/height of the vase: Determine the size of the arrangement you want to make. Is it large, medium or small? The vase of choice will need to be of equal proportion.

Width/mouth of vase: Is it wide enough to fit all the stems of the flowers and greenery? If the opening is wider than the total stems, you may consider chicken wire or a tape grid for additional support.

Style: Is the style of the vase in alignment with the style/vibe of the flower arrangement?

Color: Does the color(s) of the vase complement the colors of the flowers?

I always use a vase that is stylish and enhances the beauty of my flower arrangements. I love the extra pop of color and added flair.

How to make the bouquet!

This particular flower arrangement is definitely a showstopper, with its luscious red roses and contrasting greenery, held perfectly by the gold-framed vase. It’s a guaranteed crowd-pleaser. One of the best features of this bouquet is how easy and fast it is to put together.

To start, prep your vase with lukewarm water and flower food. Freshly trim all the stems and remove any remaining thorns from your roses.

Now you’re ready to begin adding the first element: the Salal tips. Grab a handful and place them in the vase, spreading them out evenly. This creates the base structure for the arrangement.

Next, begin adding the roses. Space them out evenly throughout the vase. When placing the central roses, leave them slightly elevated to create a gentle dome shape.

To wrap things up, add the Willow Eucalyptus, working it in between the roses and Salal tips
