What Flowers Pair Well With Mums?
Where to start?
Pick a color scheme or look to nature!
Chrysanthemums are some of the most versatile flowers available. They are available in many colors, shapes, sizes and varying petal styles. With that being said, nearly all flowers can be paired with Mums. All you need to do is decide on a MOTIF!
This bouquet was inspired by the various vibrant colors of Fall! To mimic the colors of the changing leaves, I selected flowers were golden yellow, deep red and bright green.
I also considered the textures involved and wanted a nice blend of textures for this arrangement. No special occasion really, other than wanting to bring the outdoors in.
Scroll further down for more guidance on how to select flowers for an arrangement. Giving thought to some of these key points can help you decide on which direction you want to take and get started with designing your bouquet.

How to select flowers for an arrangement

Color
Start with the color of a focal flower. You can make the focal flower stand out by pairing it with more subtle colors. Ex. #1.
You can also have colors of similar hues, blending the flowers and creating more of a unified look. Ex. #2. Either way, have fun with it and select a color(s) that makes you feel good.

Texture
Flowers that have larger or rounded petals, give the appearance of a soft texture. Ex. #1.
Flowers that have smaller or narrow petals can convey a more rigid appearance. Ex. #2. The overall shape of the flower will also contribute to overall appearance of texture.

Style
Think about the overall style of the bouquet you want to create. Do you want something bright and cheerful, possibly asymmetrical? Ex. #1.
Are you interested in something simple and more mainstream? Ex. #2. There are so many avenues that can be taken when considering the style of bouquet.

Complexity
Flower arrangement complexity can be vast. You can have a single flower type and still have a gorgeous bouquet. Ex. #1.
You can stockpile a bouquet with numerous flowers and accent pieces! Ex. #2. From one extreme to the next and everywhere in between, just make it yours!

Profile
If the flowers you have allow for a fuller looking bouquet, consider a low-profile vase. Ex. #1. Not every arrangement has to be a standard style vase.
If you have long, stocky flowers, keep with the natural higher profile and use a tall vase. Ex. #2. Larger, taller vases can also contribute to creating more grand statement pieces.

Occasion
Birthday? Holiday? Or maybe, just because? Whatever the reason, the occasion can help guide you in making a selection. Fresh flowers are always great for the holidays. Ex. #1
Special occasions are the perfect excuse for having fresh flowers around, but I find it’s nice to have flowers around all the time. Ex. #2
Decisions, decisions, decisions…
When it comes to making an arrangement, sometimes it’s helpful to have a set idea in mind. And sometimes it can be fun to just wing it! See what catches your eye or makes you smile. Many times, I select flowers based on a feeling or which flowers really stand out. Then I make my other selections based on how the flowers and greenery all look together.

Select your vase and prep your water.
This vase is slightly unique in it’s appearance. It’s a play on the fishbowl but has the neck that gives it more of an elegant look. The narrow neck also allows for the use of fewer flowers and still supports the flowers nicely.
Don’t forget to fill your vase with flower food and water prior to adding the flowers.

Tips to Start
Even though this vase has a relatively narrow mouth, it’s still a little too wide to start off with just Peruvian Lilies and have them stand as desired. What’s the solution to the issue? Rubber bands!
Take note of the rubber band in the picture. It’s wrapped around loosely but tight enough to have the flowers standing as shown.
Don’t have rubber bands? Reuse the ones that come on the flowers and save them for future use!
OR
Have the rubber band placed higher up on the stems. As the arrangement gets fuller, the flowers will conceal it.

Secondary Flower
Once the Peruvian Lilies are arranged, start adding the Mums. Evenly disperse the Mums throughout to create this look.
Utilize the rubber band by running the Mum stems through it upon placement. Not every Mum needs to be placed within the rubber band. Only the ones that still need the extra support.
Fill in the Gaps, Break up the Blocks
The arrangement is filling out but may have some holes or blocks of color. Use the Calla Lilies to fill in any holes or large blocks of yellow.
Seeing how this arrangement has contrasting colors, you want to make sure your varying colors are evenly dispersed throughout, unless you are creating a color block arrangement!

Finishing Touches

Finally, add in the greenery. Once again, evenly disperse this piece within the arrangement to fill in any possible gaps and breaking up color.
Now you have a completed bouquet inspired by one of my favorite seasons! Enjoy!
